Most of our home décor collections come and go. However, we always offer a magnificent selection of candles. Just like plants, there is a right and wrong way to care for any of the candles you buy at our stores. To keep these candles in perfect shape, make sure to follow these candle care tips.

The Rolling Greens Candle Care Tips

  1. Trim the wick - There are a few things to keep in mind with the first burn. Starting with cutting the wick. Whether it's the first burn or the 30th, trimming your wick will ensure a clean and even burn. Try to be as precise as possible. Cutting the wick too short will make it very difficult to light the candle at all. We suggest keeping the wick length around 0.25 inches.
  2. Make sure the candle burns evenly on the first burn - This step is crucial. On the first burn, make sure the entire surface of the candle melts before you put it out. In doing so, this prevents the candle from creating a rim of solid wax that never ends up melting. This process is called tunneling. To prevent this from happening, let it burn for about an hour.
  3. Keep your candle clean - At some point, your candle will develop soot and debris within the container. We suggest cleaning the candle the moment you see this happen. If not, the debris can catch fire and cause the candle and container to overheat. Remove the debris with tweezers and use a paper towel to wipe off the soot. If the soot is stubborn, add a bit of coconut oil to the towel to remove it.
  4. Don't let your wick mushroom - As you continue to use your candles, you will notice that the wick may start to look like a piece of burnt popcorn at the top. This is called a mushroom and it's natural but should always be trimmed off before lighting. If not, it will create a very large, smoky flame that can cause the candle to burn faster.
  5. Only let it burn 3 to 4 hours at a time - Timing truly is everything with candles. Candles are designed to burn for 3 to 4 hours at a time. Why? In this period, enough of the wax has melted to let the fragrance permeate throughout the air. However, letting it burn longer than that can damage some of the oils and cause more soot to develop.
  6. Don’t blow out your candle - There are a handful of ways to put out your candles. Many of the candles we sell at our Beverly Grove and Culver City nurseries come with a lid. Lids are a great way to put out a candle. You can also dip the wick in the melted wax with a wick dipper. If you don't have a lid or candle care tools, make sure to blow out the candle carefully to prevent any wax from splattering.

Finally, while it goes without saying, never leave your candles burning unattended.
