Our first ever pumpkin patch
pumpkins_4.jpg

This year, for the first time ever, our Los Angeles store will be selling live pumpkins! Beautiful white and peach fairytale pumpkins, small odd shaped gourds as well as long stemmed orange pumpkins have filled our store over the last week and we couldn't be more excited. pumpkins_2pumpkins

There are so many eclectic varieties outside of the traditional orange jack-o-lantern. One of our favorites is the fairytale pumpkin, it's true name is the Musque De Provence which comes from the varieties original origin of France. Or the mini "Jack-be-little" pumpkins that can last for months if they are kept out of the sun. Another trendy pumpkin is the Australian jarrahdale pumpkin, noticeable by their slate-green coloring and drum shape.

Nothing screams fall more than a good pumpkin and with halloween only 3 weeks away it's time to start picking yours. We love them for decorating a porch or mantel and of course for all the fun do-it-yourself projects.  If you need help in the DIY department we have just the thing for you, our fun succulent pumpkin workshop! The event will be led by Laurie March from HGTV and the DIYNetwork alongside one of our talented arrangement bar baristas on Saturday October 24th at 3p.m. So mark your calendar and don't forget to sign up on our website before all the seats are taken.

For those of you who can handle a small craft on your own we suggest taking a pledge to join in the teal pumpkin project. The halloween project was created  last year by FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education) to bring awareness to the 1 in 13 children who suffer from food allergies. Halloween is known for tricks and treats, but unfortunately for children with food allergies halloween traditions can be anything but fun when candy can trigger an allergic reaction. By placing a teal pumpkin in front of your home you are informing the small goblins in the neighborhood that your home has more to offer than candy. FARE suggest non-food items such as stickers, glow sticks and bubbles to promote safety, inclusion, and respect for those managing food allergies.

How to properly care for your terrarium
Optimized-arrangement_bar_image11.jpg

Optimized-arrangement_bar_image1Terrariums are one of the hottest trends of home decor. They’re unique shapes and neat appearance make them extremely appealing. You can hang them from patios, put them on a coffee table, or in a bathroom. They can be filled with all sorts of different plants. Although these trendy arrangements are beautiful you have to know how to properly care for them or they won’t be beautiful for long. So we asked our expert baristas at The Arrangement Bar for some tips. Watering and lighting

Watering and the type of light your terrarium needs will obviously depend on the plants that are inside of it. With that said:

When watering remember that because terrariums do not have a drainage system it’s easier to put too much water in them, which can end up causing the plants to rot and die. Continuing…

The desert terrarium:

Our barista Jeaneth working her magic

If your terrarium is filled with plants of the desert species such as cacti and succulents then they will need to be watered every 2-3 weeks, this also depends on the heat of where they are living. Check the soil before watering, if it is completely dry make sure to lightly saturate the roots with water, but do not flood the terrain. Our barista Jeaneth recommends watering them once every 8 days if they are placed where they receive little light. However,  These do best on a kitchen windowsills and bright rooms.

Tillandsia terrariums:

Usually, we do not recommend spraying your terrarium with a spray bottle because that will only wet the flowering top and not get into the soil. However, it is recommended to spray a terrarium if it is filled with the air plant, tillandsia. If you have a tillandsia filled terrarium water it once a week with a spray bottle. To avoid leaving residue on the glass of a tillandsia terrarium take the tillandsia out of the glass to spray it, let dry, and place back into the container. These plants live longest in the bathroom or kitchen were they can get some humidity and the proper amount of light.

If you would like to place your terrariums outside they must be in complete shade, under a well covered patio would be best.

A 10 inch water dropper is also a great way to water your terrariums, they get into the root and will not leave residue on the glass.

Have a pair of long-tip scissors to trim dead leaves, it's important to trim your plant so it can continue to grow.

We hope this has been helpful, if you have any more questions or concerns regarding the care of your terrarium comment below!

DIY Pumpkin Succulent Arrangements.

Fall is in full swing & that means: PUMPKINS! We love these squashes of the season and figuring out all the fun new ways to creatively use them each year.  We had our October Learn + Grow Workshop this past Saturday, which is always a fun-filled saturday creating succulent pumpkin arrangements! (If you didn't go, you definitely missed out!) We wanted to share our secrets on how to create our signature pumpkin succulent arrangements!

Step 1

STEP 1 | Gather up your tools & what you'll need. These items include:

- Pumpkin, any kind will do, but the fairytale pumpkins have always been our favorite! Pumpkins with a flat top will work best for this project. - Moss - Hot Glue or Crafting Glue - As many Succulents as you wish! - Floral Wire

Step 2

Step 2 | Use a hot glue gun (or crafting glue) to adhere the moss onto the top of the pumpkin. You want the moss to be about 1″ deep. Trim the edges when you’re done.

Step 3 Step 4

Step 4 | Begin to arrange the succulents. Start with the large cuttings first and fill in with the smaller ones. Make sure you pack them in tightly and try to shake off as much excess dirt as possible so you can add more in!

Step 5 Step 6 Step 7

Step 5 & 6: Use floral wire cut into small segments and folded in half (like pins!) to keep your succulents in place so they don't slide around on top of your pumpkin. After that, you're all done! You've made your very own Pumpkin Succulent Arrangement. Too easy right?!
